Join Us in Celebrating 20 Years of Improving Health for All!
20 years of spearheading impact through technology. 20 years of fighting for the right of access to quality care. 20 years of supporting health workers with innovative and digital tools.
And we are not going anywhere until our vision – a world where everyone, no matter where, has access to the healthcare they need to live longer and healthier lives – is fulfilled.
Founded by Dr. Marc Mitchell in 2004, we are excited to this year be celebrating our 20th anniversary.
20 years of spearheading impact through technology.
20 years of fighting for the right of access to quality care.
20 years of supporting health workers with innovative and digital tools.
Despite our efforts, millions of people continue to die every year because they don’t get the quality healthcare that they need when, and where, they need it.
The Impact
Our approach has proved to be scalable and sustainable in improving access to and quality of care for all.
We act local, but our vision is global.
Working together is at the core of who we are. We are proud to have worked with governments, local partners, innovators and digital health pioneers since 2004. We talked to some of our friends about our anniversary, here’s what they had to say.
To Marc Mitchell, whose mentorship and inspiration were only rivaled by his knack for challenging me at the mHealth Alliance — turning every conversation into a mental marathon that helped to strengthen our impact. In the winding-down of the Alliance, I will never forget his personal outreach, longer and less challenging conversations, and the encouragement that led to the creation of health.enabled.
To Marc, diplomacy was less important than pointing out truthful or insightful problems with ideas and challenging us to think through those problems. Even until the last days of his life, he was at the cutting edge of the space.

D-tree’s pioneering Jamii ni Afya program exemplifies the transformative power of data-driven decision support for and performance management of CHWs. Their support of Zanzibar’s commitment to formally integrate CHWs into the health system marks a significant milestone for the proCHW movement globally.
Congratulations on this important milestone!
Over the past 6 years, our collaboration with D-tree has highlighted the transformative potential of innovative health programs. Jamii ni Afya is redefining community health in Zanzibar, while Afya-Tek is augmenting healthcare access in mainland Tanzania. Together, we’re paving the way for community-based and sustainable healthcare solutions.
The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation has partnered with D-tree for a few years, and we continue to be impressed by how they are integrating early childhood development into health systems and using innovation to equip caregivers with the knowledge and resources needed to enable the healthy development of children.
D-tree was one of the first organizations using digital tools to address health inequities and the organization’s staying power is a testament to its commitment to innovation, collaboration and impact. This is a chance to celebrate Marc Mitchell’s ingenuity and the vision that has been realized by every D-tree team member over the last 20 years.
D-tree’s efforts have significantly influenced community health across our country. By skillfully and creatively utilizing digital technology, they have been dedicated to broadening universal healthcare access in Tanzania since 2004.
I thank God for being part of an organization that does not shy away from change to drive positive impact for those we work for and with. Transformation based on lessons learned is inevitable if we are to improve people’s health outcomes.
It has been an honor working with D-tree in Zambia to strengthen community health systems. By leveraging technology and understanding community needs, D-tree supports the Ministry’s efforts to empower frontline health workers and improve health services.
Marc was a good friend, wise mentor, and a relentless advocate for health; not only globally, but personally as well. It is so easy in our work to sacrifice our own health to drive equity for the world. Marc gently but persistently inspired me to prioritize healthy pacing and work/life balance. ‘Listen to the wisdom of the flight attendants,’ he’d say, ‘put your own mask on before helping others.’
D-tree has done a wonderful since starting to work with the Ministry of Health in Zanzibar. Their main contribution has been around community heath workers. In Zanzibar, 2,300 community health workers have been well trained, can collect data, share information and help the community. D-tree is creating bridges between the community, health centres and ministry.

Reflections from the CEO: How can we Accelerate to Achieve Better Health for All, Faster?
Dear Partners, Supporters and Friends,
As D-tree celebrates its 20th anniversary, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we’ve undertaken and where we are heading. I joined D-tree a couple of years ago and I can say with confidence that the past two decades have been filled with moments of both challenge and celebration.
